Manhattan Life Health Insurance Supplement Reviews

manhattan life

Manhattan Life is a well-known player in Medicare supplements. The company offers plans under its own name as well as its subsidiary, Western United Life Assurance Company. Manhattan Life does not offer Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) or prescription drug plans (Part D), but its Medicare supplement line is one of the top competitors.

About Manhattan Life

Manhattan Life was founded in 1850, and its corporate headquarters are located in Houston, TX. Life insurance policies were its only product for some time until consumers asked for more. Even now, the company continues to grow and add products to its long list of offerings.

How does the Manhattan Life Medicare supplement work?

The government has standardized Medicare supplements. That means that each Medicare supplement remains the same, no matter who you purchase one from. A Plan G from Manhattan Life offers the same benefits as a Plan G from any other insurance carrier. The difference is in the premium.

Also, standardization means that the coverage never changes from one year to the next. Standardization makes these plans more simple to understand and also enables beneficiaries to more accurately predict their healthcare expenses.

Medicare supplements only offer coverage for services and expenses that are approved by Medicare Parts A and B. A supplement comes in after A and B have paid their portions, but they will not pay for any treatment that Parts A or B denies.

Features of Manhattan Life Medicare Supplements

Manhattan Life is a long-standing, trustworthy company. It offers its members stability that may not be found in newer companies. AM Best, an insurance rating organization, rates Manhattan Life as a B+ company, which proves that it delivers the service it promises.

Manhattan Life also offers a discount of 7% when two household members enroll in a Medicare supplement under their company.

The Four Manhattan Life Medicare Supplements

Manhattan Life offers four Medicare supplements to Medicare beneficiaries.

Manhattan Life Plan A

Medicare supplement Plan A only offers the most basic benefits. It is not a popular supplemental plan but is available for individuals who are on Medicare due to a disability and for beneficiaries who need a low monthly premium.

Manhattan Life Plan A includes:

  • Part A hospice coinsurance/copayment
  • Part A coinsurance and up to an additional 365 days of hospital costs after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Part B coinsurance/copayment
  • Blood (3 pints)

Manhattan Life Plan F

Manhattan Life Plan F is only available to beneficiaries who turned 65 prior to January 1, 2020. While Plan F offers the most benefits, we highly recommend comparing it to the lower premiums of Plan G. As you’ll see, the two plans are not very different in their coverage.

Manhattan Life Plan F covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part A coinsurance and up to an additional 365 days of hospital costs after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Part A hospice coinsurance/copayment
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Part B coinsurance/copayment
  • Blood (3 pints)
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency expenses

Manhattan Life Plan G

If you aren’t’ eligible for Plan F or are looking for a lower premium, Plan G is the best alternative. The only difference between Plan F and Plan G is that Plan G does not pay the Part B deductible, which is $233 in 2022. Most of the time, the lower premiums of Plan G more than make up for the cost of the Part B deductible.

Manhattan Life Plan G covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part A coinsurance and up to an additional 365 days of hospital costs after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Part A hospice coinsurance/copayment
  • Part B excess charges
  • Part B coinsurance/copayment
  • Blood (3 pints)
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency expenses

Manhattan Life Plan N

Plan N requires more out-of-pocket expenses due to some copays, but for those who would like an even lower monthly premium, it’s a great value for the cost.

Manhattan Life Plan N covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part A coinsurance and up to an additional 365 days of hospital costs after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Part A hospice coinsurance/copayment
  • Part B coinsurance/copayment, except for a $20 copayment for some office visits and a $50 copayment for emergency services unrelated to inpatient admission
  • Blood (3 pints)
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency expenses
  • No out-of-pocket limit

Other Manhattan Life Products

While Manhattan Life does not currently offer Part C or Part D plans, they do offer a Dental, Vision, Hearing (DVH) policy that helps with these services since they are not covered by Original Medicare or a Medicare supplement. The benefits you can receive with a Manhattan Life DVH policy increase the longer you have the plan.
